Frequently asked questions

How can I start a request or contact LASEROPTIK?

You can start a request or contact us:

- on our website, just fill in the form: https://www.laseroptik.com/en/customer-service/starting-a-request

- within LOOP (LASEROPTIK Online Portal), after choosing matching coating(s): https://loop.laseroptik.de/

- contacting us directly via E-mail or phone, for general questions use the main service desk, for special applications choose one of the specialists shown: https://www.laseroptik.com/en/customer-service/contact

We do not have distributors; you can contact us directly. This saves time and extra costs.

What information do you need to quote a custom coating?

For a quotation we need to know at least the following information:

  • Material, quantity and size of the substrates.

For curved surfaces, name the radius of curvature and the used aperture.

Will they be supplied by customer or LASEROPTIK?

  • What coating do you need? Please name the used wavelengths and needed optical properties for each of them.

What angle of incidence (AOI) do you work with? In case of AOI > 0° please also name the used polarization, if there is a special one.

  • Which surfaces have to be coated (both, plane, curved, wedged side)?
  • If not mentioned otherwise we will offer for standard laser power and normal environmental conditions (use in air at room temperature). If available, send us information on the beam profile and expected LIDT; for pulsed laser: J/cm², repetition rate and pulse duration; for cw-application: kW per cm beam radius.
  • Send your complete contact data, best also with your phone number, so we can contact you directly for additional questions.

What is a typical batch capacity?

The batch capacity depends on the substrate size, the difficulty of the coating and, of course, the chosen coating method. To name one value, up to 50 pieces Ø 25 mm fit into one run using a standard coating made by EBE, IAD, IBS or MS.

A combination of different substrate sizes within one batch is possible, too.

There is no minimum quantity at LASEROPTIK, individual pieces are also possible.

Can I buy even a small quantity or prototypes from LASEROPTIK?

We produce from prototype to serial production, there are no limits.

You need a coating on just one unique crystal or glass cell? No problem.

I need lots of coated optics now or within a serial production, can LASEROPTIK help?

LASEROPTIK can offer customized solutions for your needs. For very large quantities we offer blanket orders covering a year or even more for every coating technique.

With our highly automated magnetron sputtering system “Sola” we can produce high volumes even for complex filter systems, multiline coatings and precise AR and HR coatings.

Is it possible to coat different substrate materials within one batch?

Yes, we can coat different substrate materials within one batch if the refractive indices and thermal expansion coefficients are comparable. For example, N-SF6 can be coated together with YAG.

Fused Silica (FS) and CaF2 have a quite similar refractive index but often cannot be coated together due to the different thermal properties.

Can I send my own substrates for coating?

Yes, LASEROPTIK can coat customer-owned substrates as well as substrates supplied by us, or a combination of both.

I need a coating on my own substrates or crystals made of unusual material, what information do you need?

Besides the standard values for quantity and size, we need to know at least the refractive index and thermal properties (maximum usable temperature and the thermal expansion coefficient).

I have substrates of unusual size. Can they also be coated, and does it cost a surcharge?

LASEROPTIK now has over 17,000 different holders in stock, mostly for the usual substrate sizes, but also for special shapes. If there are no holders for your size yet, we can make special ones in our own precision mechanic’s workshop. These are only charged once and can be used again for the next order.

I want to use my own substrates, but I don't have them available yet. Can I order in advance and deliver my substrates later?

Yes, our delivery time counts from receiving the order. You can deliver your substrates later, but they must arrive here at least 2 weeks before the planned coating date (if the holders are available).

What are the main cost drivers for a custom coating?

The biggest cost drivers for a custom coating are usually

  • the coating duration (= layer thickness): the thicker a coating, the longer it takes and the more expensive it becomes.
  • the substrate sizes: Depending on the size of the surface to be coated or the thickness/length of the substrates, a special configuration of the coating machine may have to be used. The additional effort increases coating costs.

For standard sizes, we have over 17,000 holders available in stock. For special sizes, additional one-time holder costs may be added.

Can LASEROPTIK offer ready coated optics from stock?

Yes, we have ready-coated optics in stock that we can deliver within a day. The standard ones (which we produce periodically) can be seen within LOOP, the LASEROPTIK Online Portal https://loop.laseroptik.de.

Besides this, we have another (and even larger) stock which cannot be seen online. This is where we store overproduction. All optics have the same high quality standard as you are used to from LASEROPTIK. If you just need a few special optics, ask us, maybe we can help you.

The availability of stock components is usually subject to prior sale.
